• Documentation of patient encounters, referrals and coding in Genesis or any other military Patient Management system required.
• Completion of the USAF Aviation/Special Duty and Warfighter Refractive Surgery Certification Course is required.
• Examination, diagnosis, treatment, and management of diseases and disorders of the visual system, the eye, and associated structures, as well as diagnosis of related systemic conditions utilizing refractive, pharmaceutical, and rehabilitative (low vision, contact lens, and binocular vision) procedures.
• Utilization and prescription of pharmaceutical agents for the examination of the eye and adnexa as well as treatment and management of vision disorders, diseases, and conditions of the eye and adnexa.
• Utilization and prescription of ophthalmic and other rehabilitative prosthetic devices (including spectacles, contact lenses, low vision devices, etc.) and training in their use.
• Ordering of diagnostic laboratory studies (including preparation of specimens for cultures, sensitivity testing, smear and histological analysis, chemistry, hematology, coagulation, serology/ immunology, nuclear medicine, urinalysis, etc.); ordering of diagnostic imaging studies (ultrasound of the eye, head, neck, heart; ocular fluorescein and indocyanine green angiography; radiology of the eye, orbit, head, neck, chest including X-ray, CT, MRI, MRA with and without contrast; etc.).
• Consultation with attending physicians and others, when requested, to augment the care of patients; referral to appropriate health care providers of patients with medical, surgical, psychiatric, and rehabilitative conditions; health education and sight conservation programs to inform patients of potential ocular complications of disease processes and to prevent loss of sight or reduced visual performance as a result of safety hazards or environmental influences; emergency care not within scope of other approved privileges to prevent imminent vision loss; providing appropriate military specific documentation such as (but not limited to) narrative medical summaries for Medical Evaluation Boards and medical profile paperwork.
• Perform clinical procedures to include refractive status determination; binocular vision status determination; ocular and adnexal health evaluation; external, anterior segment, and fundus photography with interpretation; ocular electro diagnostic measurement with interpretation; ocular diagnostic imaging (ultrasonographic and laser) measurement with interpretation; ocular angiographic (fluorescein and indocyanine green) photography with interpretation; epilation of lashes; expression of adnexal glands; examination, testing, dilation and irrigation of the lacrimal apparatus; insertion of temporary and permanent punctual plugs; removal of non-perforating foreign bodies from the eye and adnexa; uncomplicated repair of non-perforating ocular and adnexal lacerations; suture removal from the eye or adnexa; corneal debridement and intrastromal repair of recurrent epithelial erosions; corneal scraping for culturing.

   

• Doctor of Optometry (O.D.) from a 4-year school or college of optometry in the United States, Puerto Rico or Canada accredited by the Accreditation Council on Optometric Education (ACOE) in the year of the applicant’s graduation and approved by the U.S. Air Force Surgeon General.
• Possess a permanent, full, and unrestricted therapeutic pharmaceutical agents (TPA) license to practice optometry in a State, Territory or Commonwealth of the United States or in the District of Columbia. License cannot be under investigation nor have any adverse action pending from a State Board or national licensing/certification agency.
• Two years of general TPA practice of optometry or one year of ACOE accredited post-graduate residency training in an appropriate specialty area.
• Employed full-time in the practice of optometry or in training for 24 of the last 36 months.
• Possess and maintain current Basic Life Support certification.
• Sufficient experience to be able to adequately perform optometric tasks, to include, but not limited to the following:
  • Participate in the installation’s occupational vision program involving functions performed by the optometry clinic.
  • Perform a primary role in the visual readiness and optimization of active duty personnel for both war and peace mission accomplishment.
  • Participate in squadron process improvement activities, evaluation of squadron performance, and optometric related research and provide training to ophthalmic technicians, other optometrists, and other wing staff as appropriate.
• Working knowledge of computer operations and proficiency in the use of basic word processing, data entry and automated medical records.
