Responsibilities

  • Assist in developing nutritional programs and progressive methodologies that complement command performance training, programs/technology, reduce injury/illness potential, and increase/maintain optimum performance levels in an elite operating environment.
  • Manage and implement the Davis-Monthan Human Performance Optimization nutrition program and coordinate in the care of Special Warfare Operators and Aviators who have special nutritional needs.
  • Evaluate nutritional supplements, including herbal supplements, for legality, safety, quality, and efficacy; monitor use of appropriate supplementation per Air Force Instructions/guidance. Recommend budgets for purchasing and distribution of nutritional supplements, if applicable.
  • Provide nutritional planning, counseling, and documentation that is guided by evidence-based peer reviewed literature and also in accordance with Air Force Instructions.
  • Advise the chain of command on issues pertinent to nutrition and performance nutrition.
  • Provide individual and group counseling for guidance on performance nutrition. Educate in food selection (grocery store tours, food storage) and food preparation (cooking classes) at on-base facilities.
  • Design and implement performance nutrition programs per Air Force Instruction for Special Warfare and Aviation personnel at home station, Temporary Duty locations, and deployed settings per Air Force Instructions/guidance. Coordinate nutrition for domestic and/or international travel, for example, catering, hotels, airlines, competition, for individuals and teams.
  • Develop nutritional protocols and guidelines for rehabilitation and performance in coordination with medical providers. Counsel Special Warfare Operators and Aviators on optimal nutrition for exercise training (match nutrition to training phases, periodization and goals), competition, recovery from exercise, weight management hydration, immunity, travel and supplementation. Provide counseling on achieving and maintaining a level of body mass, body fat, and muscle mass that is consistent with optimal performance.
  • Recommend policy and instructional materials and provide individual and group instruction (medical nutrition therapy and nutrition education) as appropriate based on Special Warfare Operator and Aviator need, level of understanding, cultural needs, and physical condition.
  • Collaborate with the operational unit designated Human Performance Program Manager and/or Coordinator for implementation of new protocols and guidelines. Perform other tasks, within the scope of the position description, in partnership with the Human Performance program Manager and/or Coordinator as part of the Human Performance Team.
  • Coordinate with other regional Special Warfare and Aviator human performance assets as required by the operational unit Human Performance Program Manager and/or Coordinator and approved by the chain of command. Position may require travel for human performance related conferences/working groups up to once quarterly that will be funded by the government as coordinated by the operational unit and MDG leadership. The performance dietitian shall provide patient related care only to 355 MDG beneficiaries while on Davis-Monthan AFB.
  • Ensure adequate government provided educational materials and sports nutrition specific supplies are available. Assist with supply inventories and provide input on supply needs.
  • Ensure that government equipment and kitchen facilities under the purview of the Performance Dietitian are in safe working condition and are properly utilized.
  • Update records as required. Manage and evaluate performance optimization and maintain a nutritional log for counseling, briefings, and research purposes. Use the government provided human performance database and the electronic medical record when required, for all documentation of encounters with Special Warfare Operators and Aviators.
  • Participate in periodic in-service training for members of the operational unit and MDG Human Performance Staff. Participate in continuing education programs to update and/or maintain skills and knowledge and conduct training of peers and subordinates. Meet annual requirements to comply with credentialing and privileging guidelines, directives, accreditation standards and the Commission on Dietetic Registration.
  • Perform administrative duties, which may include maintaining records of workload, participating in education programs, and participating in clinical staff quality assurance functions. Perform administrative and clinical duties within their scope of practice.
  • Participate in peer (record) reviews and professional staff meetings as directed and required per the 355 MDG credentials guidelines.
  • Educate and mentor MDG approved volunteers, students, and others as appropriate as part of the Human Performance Team as a one-deep specialist. Provide Air Force approved guidance to Registered Dietetic Technician (DTR), student workers, and employees.

Qualifications

  • Master’s level degree in Nutrition Science or related field.
  • Receive and maintain clinical practice privileges from the 355 MDG.
  • Preferred minimum of 5 years or more of demonstrable accumulated experience (continuous and sustained experience preferred) as a Performance Dietitian with individual athletes and groups of athletes at the levels of NCAA, Olympic, professional, and/or Special Operations Operators in the accompanying, respective settings. Must have practiced in this setting within 2 years.
  • Capable of meeting physical demands to be in the environment with Special Warfare operators and Aviators including the ability to hike over rough terrain and function in austere environments to observe training evolutions, strength and conditioning testing, and training protocols to help understand fueling requirements. Must be able to lift and manipulate loads and plates up to 50 lbs. All operator training required to be observed by the performance dietitian will occur either on base or at a government designated/authorized alternate duty location in the local Tucson area, at no additional cost to the government.
  • Fluent oral and written communication skills in English.
  • Proficiency in basic computer applications for word processing, record keeping, presentations, and nutrition assessment (e.g. Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Project, and Outlook).

License - Certifications

  • Certification from the American Dietetic Association (ADA) as a Registered Dietitian (RD) and a specialty certification as a Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics (CSSD). CSSD certification may be waived by 355 Medical Group (355 MDG) leadership if all other qualifications are met; however, the RD must have at least 18 months of experience as a dietitian and have already completed the required 2000 hours in a sports/performance setting towards obtaining the CSSD. The CSSD certification must be obtained within six months of employment at no additional cost to the Government (to include using patient contact hours obtained while employed under this contract).
  • Desired additional qualifications include: Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) and/or documented experience in human performance research. Current and valid certification/licensure.
  • Have current Basic Life Support certification.
